Volatility / Variance

How risky a slot's payout pattern is. Low volatility = frequent small wins. High volatility = rare but big wins. Same RTP, different ride.

What volatility measures

Volatility (also called variance) describes how lumpy a game's payout pattern is. Two games with identical RTP can feel completely different to play depending on their volatility profile.

  • Low volatility: many small wins, rare large wins. Smooth bankroll, low excitement. Examples: Starburst, classic 3-reel slots.
  • Medium volatility: balance between small and large wins. Most popular slots target this range.
  • High volatility: rare wins, but bigger when they hit. Bankroll swings dramatically. Examples: Sweet Bonanza, Gates of Olympus, Razor Shark.
  • Extreme volatility: very rare wins with massive max-win potential. Long dry stretches are normal. Examples: Mental, Money Train 4, Tombstone R.I.P.

Volatility ≠ RTP

Two games at 96% RTP can feel completely different. A low-volatility 96% slot returns close to 96% in most sessions; a high-volatility 96% slot returns 0% in many sessions and 5,000%+ in rare ones — same long-run average, very different rides.

Choosing volatility for your bankroll

Match volatility to your session length and bankroll:

  • Short session (under 200 spins) → low volatility, or you'll bust before variance smooths.
  • Medium session (500–1000 spins) → medium volatility works.
  • Long session (2000+ spins) with adequate bankroll → high or extreme volatility becomes feasible.
